The Story

The piña colada was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1954, a bartender named Ramón "Monchito" Marrero set out to create a drink that captured the spirit of the island in a single glass. He spent months experimenting before landing on the perfect combination: fresh pineapple juice, Coco López coconut cream, and rum, blended together into something no one had ever tasted before.

He called it the piña colada.

Guests fell in love with it instantly. Word spread beyond the hotel, beyond the island, and eventually around the world. In 1978, Puerto Rico officially declared it the national drink.

Seventy years later, the original recipe still starts with one thing: Coco López, the coconut cream Monchito trusted from the beginning.

A tropical drink served in a tall, curvy glass with pineapple, cherry, and green leaves garnishing, along with black and white striped straws.

The Original Piña Colada 1954

Ramón "Monchito" Marrero's 1954 original recipe

from San Juan, Puerto Rico

  • 2 ounces white rum

  • 1 ounces Coco López coconut cream

  • 4 ounces fresh pineapple juice

  • 1 cups crushed ice

  • 1 pineapple wedge, for garnish

  • 1 maraschino cherry, for garnish

  • STEPS:

1 Combine ingredients: Add 2 ounces white rum, 1 ounces Coco López coconut cream, 4 ounces fresh pineapple juice, and 1 cups crushed ice to a blender.

2 Blend: Blend on high until smooth and creamy.

3 Pour and garnish: Pour into a chilled glass and garnish with a 1 pineapple wedge, for garnish and 1maraschino cherry, for garnish. Serve immediately.

NOTES: Coco López is non-negotiable for the authentic original. Do not substitute with coconut milk or any other cream of coconut. The ratio of coconut cream to pineapple juice is what sets this recipe apart.
